    Title:
    What are Simultaneous Resources?
    Summary:
    What are Simultaneous Resources?
    Content:

When assigning Resources to a Standard Operation, there is a Principal checkbox. The Using Manufacturing guide says" The indicator that a resource is the principal resource within a group of simultaneous resources. The simultaneous resources must have only one resource designated as principal resource." What are simultaneous resources, how do I set them up and how do they work? I can't find anything about that.

Simultaneous resources are a group of resources which share the same sequence number within a work order operation. All scheduled resources which share the same sequence number are scheduled in parallel together. All scheduled resources which share different sequence numbers are scheduled in series in the ascending order of the sequence number.

For Example consider the following resources associated to Operation Sequence #10 of WO #1

    1. Res Sequence: 10

        Resource Name: Technician

        Usage: 1 hour

        Activity: Setup

    2. Res Sequence: 20

        Resource Name: Lathe

        Usage: 2 hours

    3. Res Sequence: 20

        Resource Name: Operator

        Usage: 2.5 hours

In the above example, Work order scheduling will first schedule Technician Resource for 1 hour. This would be followed by scheduling both the lathe resource and operator resource in parallel for 2 hours and 2.5 hours respectively. So overall scheduled duration of Operation # 10 = 1 hour + Max of (2, 2.5)  hours = 1 + 2.5 = 3.5 hours.

Hope this clarifies. There is a worked example for Scheduling in the user guide and a brief explanation of simultaneous resource. Please refer attached screenshot for simultaneous resource.

    Thanks and Regards

Thanks Alex. That's extremely helpful. And how does he Principal checkbox affect the system? Taking the example above, what happens if you make the Lathe the Principal resource?

This flag identifies one of the resources in the simultaneous pool as principal. Functionally this flag does not influence the current behavior of the application, although it is used in the background to build the relationship between the prior resource and the simultaneous resource pool while scheduling.
