    Title:
    Filter Text field as Dropdown
    Content:

    Hi Gurus,

We have one text field in the custom object. While exposing a the text field in the report for the custom object, we need to choose the values similar to that of LOV fields, could you please help me as how to set a drop down list box instead of text box while filtering the values for custom reports?

    Thanks,

    Mohan

      hey Mohana,

      you can set up a variable of type user defined list - string and populate all your values there. Then create a filter to compare your text field with the variable;

      • uncheck "Make this filter selectable..."
      • add text field to expression
      • operator = equals
      • value type = expression
      • value = $variable

      Hi Bastiaan,

Thanks for your response. But the custom field values are dynamic values. We can not predict the values.

Is it possible to display the custom field values in a dropdown dynamically based on the values available in custom field?

      Thanks,

      Mohan

nope that's not possible, filters are defined before the query is run, since the query needs the filters..

You should convert the textfield to a menu field. Or use the custom object field to generate a menu, but that all depends on your setup.

      Thanks Bastiaan,

Can you give me the steps for converting the custom object field to generate a menu?

      Thanks,

      Mohan

      Mohan,

before I can give advise on this you first need to tell me about the setup of your custom objects, how these are populated, why you have now a textfield etc..

      Hi Bastiaan,

      Thanks for the response

My custom object is child of Contact object. my query is that how to populate value as we are populating similar to that of drop down field in the text field the values are being dynamic. That is populating the dynamic value in the text field.

      Regards,

      Mohan

      Hey Mohan,

I think your best bet is to create a menu object instead of the textfield in the custom object. That will give you all the functionality you need.

      Hi Bastiaan,

As I stated earlier, we could not predict the list of values. Is there any other options to show the text field value as a drop down value in report.

      Thanks,
      Mohan

From the info you give I assume the field is populated by an integration. If so then I would change the integration to use a menu field and automatically add a new menu item when it does not exists. Otherwise you really have to give more information since I surely don't understand how things are running on your site...

      Hi Bastiaan,

If we use the free text field as filter and agent enters the input data with typo then we don't get an output. So if we use all the data available in text field as a list of values, it will give the correct answer.

Assume this scenario, We captured the offer name in separate object. If the agent wants to know the details of the particular offer, he should know the exact name of the offer for entering into text field filter. If it is displayed as a dropdown, he can easisly select. I hope I explained the situation clearly.

      Thanks,

      Mohan

      Hey Mohana,

the best way is to enable 'Object Generates Menu' in the Object Designer for the offers object. Make sure you select the textfield as the Object Lookup, so that it will use that text to generate a menu. Now when you filter on CO.Offer.ID it will show you a menu instead of a textfield.

      Hi,

the variable is working perfect but what can we do if we need also an option of "All Values"

I have calculated field that retrieved  A , B or C. I succeeded to create a filter with dropdown of A, B or C but I need also a value of  "All" and because the operator of the filter is equal it cant be done ("In List" operator is not available)

Do you have any solution for that ?

      Thanks

Did you find a solution to this?
